TRUMPETS
The Bible gives us almost no information about this holiday. The Lord simply commands:
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month,, you shall have a sabbath rest a memorial ...a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.” (Leviticus 23:24-25)
Because the holiday begins the month, it becomes a double feast day celebrating also the New Moon. The English translation of “blowing of trumpets” is actually incorrect. The Hebrew uses the word, “tru-ach” meaning a loud shout. Because of the celebration of New Moon, the silver trumpets are to be blown. Today there is a rabbinic tradition that the holiday begins “The Days of Awe” during which time the Jewish people are to prepare to stand before God for judgment. It is said that on the next holiday, the Day of Atonement, God will determine life or death for the coming year.
